About the Project:
The Giant Mine Oversight Board (GMOB), in collaboration with RFS Energy and Dr. Nicolas Brunet’s research group at the University of Guelph, have embarked on a three-year project supported by funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Climate Change Adaptation Program. The project seeks to build climate change adaptation knowledge and capacity in mine closure and perpetual care planning among mining professionals, decision-makers, rights-holders, and others. In particular, the Climate Ready Mine project team wants to understand if and how the various components of mine closure plans can be assessed for their adaptive capacity and resilience to the long-term impacts of climate change. In developing a closure plan assessment tool, the team’s hope is to facilitate and support the adoption of climate resilient strategies in the mining industry. With Giant Mine and current remediation efforts (GMRP) as a real-world example, the team will be working closely with the community and organisations in Yellowknife to co-develop these tools in ways they hope can be meaningful.
