Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Moussorgsky
A piano concert performed by Ari Snyder
The producer and performer of this concert is the accomplished composer-pianist, Ari Snyder. Now retired, and currently living in Yellowknife, he was born in Paris, France and brought up in New York City, where he studied piano at Juillard. After receiving degrees from Princeton University and U. C. Berkeley, he spent many years as a professor of English in Montreal and while living there, he directed over three dozen musicals and several choirs.
Despite arriving in Yellowknife just in time for COVID-19, he has performed in a number of public performances, including entertaining us with his solo concert of personal favourites, “Music from the Hearth.” He participated in a BAM Orchestra concert; presented a song recital at NACC with Susan Shantora and he collaborated with singers Kara Cherland, Susan Shantora and Shannon Lyman in “Love and Laughter on the 14th floor.”
Since living in Yellowknife, Ari has provided accompanist services to many singers and instrumentalists as well as the Yellowknife Youth Choir. He has accompanied almost all the singers competing in MTA-NWT’s Yellowknife Music Festival two years running.
His May concert presents a suite of pieces for piano called “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Moussorgsky, each movement being inspired by a different picture displayed at an exhibition the composer visited. The artwork displayed at an exhibition in the NACC lobby during this concert, is by local artists and was created especially for this performance.
All proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Music Teachers’ Association of the NWT.
